COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAMOur Community Health program is based on engaging the local residents to identify the most pressing challenges that affect their health and to find solutions that we can help them implement.
This was the vision of our founder, Christine Nyanda Chacha, when she encouraged local residents to form a Women's Group in 2003. After several meetings, they asked for our assistance in creating projects such as the Women’s Group community garden, which supports health and nutrition for the whole community. To secure a source of safe drinking water, REACH Shirati volunteers, including UC Berkeley engineering students, worked side by side with local residents to design and build a rainwater catchment tank. The Community Technology Worker Program helps households transition from using firewood and charcoal for cooking, which is linked to respiratory illness and contributes to 20,000 annual deaths in Tanzania, to using clean liquified petroleum gas. This program was initiated by volunteer Annelise Gill-Wiehl. Learn more about our Community Health projects: |
