Computer Learning Project
When we first opened the doors to our school in 2006, we could not have imagined that within a few years, we would have computer classes using actual small laptops! Yet in July of 2015, our 4th and 5th graders were introduced to the small laptops created by ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD.
These are low cost, low power, connected educational devices, created for distribution in the developing world. They have a small selection of educational tools onboard and by 2016, they will access a server loaded with a library of educational games, books in English and Swahili, and many Khan Academy classes. The server and laptops are charged, thanks to our 2013 Solar Panel Project installation on the roof of the school building, This project came about when Camille Harris, a member of our Advisory Board visited Tina's School in 2014. In discussions with teachers, she noticed the huge technology gap they face, so she decided to do something about it. In July of 2015, after a year of fundraising and solving technical challenges, 24 small laptops were in the hands of wide-eyed students eager to learn and explore. Our teachers were also excited, as they can now use an array of educational materials to create lesson plans. This project has made a significant impact on the whole community. With such a valuable learning opportunity, more families are now determined to keep their children in school longer despite financial challenges. |
